How to Care for Your Reusable Face Masks

Since face coverings were made compulsory for wear on public transport, as well as in shops and other close-contact environments in the UK, the demand for them has soared. Most of us have opted for reusable face masks, as not only are they more environmentally friendly but they’re often more comfortable and stylish too!

They’ve quickly become the new essential that none of us can leave the house without – although most of us have forgotten at least once! But how often have you actually washed your reusable mask?

If you’re passionate about wearing your reusable mask to keep the germs at bay and protect yourself from COVID, then you need to start taking proper care of your mask. Not sure where to start? Follow our guide to make sure your mask is keeping you as safe as possible.

How do I wash my reusable mask?

You can either wash your face mask by hand or in the washing machine. We recommend using your regular laundry detergent to clean your mask and ensure you use hot enough water – if you’re washing your mask in the machine we recommend using the highest setting possible. Check the label or packaging of your face mask to see the recommended temperature for it to be washed at.

Once your mask is washed simply leave it to air dry, preferably in direct sunlight.

How often should I wash my reusable mask?

Ideally, for your mask to provide maximum levels of protection, it needs to be washed each time you use it. As you wouldn’t want any particles left from germs that your mask comes into contact with, lingering on the fabric when you come to wear it again.

How many reusable face coverings should I buy?

Have a think about how often you personally need to wear a face mask – do you need to wear it every day for work? Or are you only wearing your mask to do your weekly food shop? If you need to wear your mask every day we’d suggest having 3 masks, so that you can allow for one wearing, one being washed and a spare.

If you’re prone to forgetting a face mask, we recommend keeping a pack of disposable masks in your car – just to be on the safe side!

When should I take my mask off?

Once you’re in a safe space, either at home or back in your car, you can remove your mask. It’s advisable to remove your mask using the ear loops, while avoiding touching the front of the mask. If you’re out and about, we suggest using a small disposable plastic bag to store your mask in until you can get it home and in the wash.

Once your mask is removed thoroughly wash your hands, or clean them with hand sanitiser if you don’t have access to a sink.
